What Is AEO? Help Customers Understand Your Business.
A plain-language guide to answer engine optimization, how it relates to SEO, and what small businesses can improve today.
What does AEO mean?
AEO stands for answer engine optimization. People use the term for work intended to help a business appear in answer-based search experiences, including AI-generated responses. SEO stands for search engine optimization: helping search engines find and understand useful pages.
These terms overlap. Google says its established SEO practices remain relevant to generative AI search. Clear, accessible pages and useful, original information still matter. Meeting Google's requirements does not guarantee indexing or an appearance in an AI response.
Answer the questions customers actually ask
Start with the questions you hear on calls and in messages. Do you serve my area? What is included? How do I request a quote? Can I book online? Do you speak Spanish? Put accurate answers on the relevant service page, where a customer can use them.
For example, a yard-service page can explain the kinds of work offered, actual service areas, what information is needed for an estimate, and how to contact the business. That gives a visitor more help than repeating “best landscaping company” throughout the page.
Make the information easy to verify
Use a consistent business name, current contact information, clear service descriptions, and honest examples of your work. Keep important details in readable text. If something changes, update the website and the relevant business listings.
Structured data can describe information on a page in a format machines understand. It should match the visible content. It does not guarantee rankings, AI citations, or a special search display. A readable page and working contact button deserve attention before a technical add-on.
Choose a useful first project
Pick your most important service page. Ask a person unfamiliar with your business to read it and explain what you offer, where you work, and what they would do next. Fix the missing answers. Then check whether visitors can reach you from their phones.
